Indian Coast Guard Station inaugurated in Nellore

Union minister of state for defence, M.M. Pallam Raju, commissioned an Indian Coast Guard Station (ICGS) at Krishnapatnam Port, near Nellore on 18th June. The station is the third such facility in Andhra Pradesh after Visakhapatnam and Kakinada.

The station will act as a hub for coastal security operations for southern Andhra Pradesh. It will coordinate with the state administration, police, port authorities, fisheries and other agencies, including local fishermen, to achieve an effective surveillance and security network.

ISRO installations at Shar, power projects coming up in the vicinity of the coast near Nellore and increase in economic activity at Krishnapatnam port, underlined the need for a Coast Guard station in the region to enhance preparedness and response capabilities to tackle all related contingencies. This station will provide logistic support to ships for search operations in the sea and will also focus on providing search and rescue cover for fishermen operating in this area.
