Kobelco Construction Machinery Co. Ltd. of Kobe Steel Group, Japan commenced production in Jan 2011 at its first plant in India to manufacture Hydraulic Excavators. The new plant is located in Sri City SEZ, near Tada in Nellore district. Kobelco Construction Equipment employed 149 people in 2011 (87 in production and 62 in sales).
The plant will be a part of Kobelco Construction Equipment India Pvt. Ltd. (KCEI) which currently markets & services KOBELCO brand Excavators from its Head Quarters at Noida (near Delhi). With an initial capacity of 1,200 units per year, the plant will produce 20-tonne class machines, for which demand is the highest in India. Flexible plant equipment will enable KCEI to also make large machines, to meet future growth in demand.
In India, there was a demand for 11,000 excavators in 2010, nearly the same as in Japan. In 2015, the demand is expected to go up to 25,000 units. Kobelco expects to grow rapidly with the initiation of local manufacturing.
The total investment is about Rs 100 crore over a period of about 3 to 4 years. With this Indian plant in operation now, Kobelco Construction Machinery has plants at six locations in four countries: Japan, China, Thailand and India, in addition to US and Italy.
