A spate of announcements by central and state governments have come as a boon to the real estate sector in Nellore. More positive news on Dugarajapatnam port and Dagadarthi airport apart from fertilizer plant, announcement of Krishnapatnam as smart city, two major Centrally-funded schemes for underground drainage and drinking water raised the hopes of those sitting on the fence.
Nellore city, with a population of 6 lakhs is witnessing a steady flow skilled and unskilled employees and workers coming and staying here over the years. Upcoming mega industrial projects apart from the thermal power stations under construction are expected to attract nearly 50,000 employees to this region. Currently, there are about 32,000 small scale industries in Nellore district employing nearly 1.36 lakh people. This number is also expected to increase as more and more ancillary industries would be setup to cater to the large industry needs.

Lavazza has its state-of-the-art manufacturing facility at Sri City SEZ at Tada in SPSR Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh. Lavazza is the world leader in the coffee market and it plans to develop India as its second largest coffee market in the world, replacing France. India ranks fifth with annual coffee sales of 800 tonnes.
The Italian firm, which has presence in over 90 countries has invested over Rs125 crore in the facility with an initial capacity of 1,100 tonnes. The new facility is expected to have production capacity of 1,400 tonnes in the second year and 1,600 tonnes in the third year. The facility will not only meet the requirements for the Indian market, but will also become a manufacturing hub for the subcontinent and Asia Pacific. The 115-year-old company sells 60,000 to 70,000 tonnes of coffee in Italy every year. Lavazza is the sixth largest coffee roaster in the world.
The Sri City facility will replace the existing one at Chennai, which was launched in 2007 with an annual production of 960 tonnes. In the recent past, Lavazza acquired Barista Coffee Company Limited and Fresh & Honest Café Limited, India’s leading coffee vending and retailing company in 2007. Baritsa Lavazza presently has 200 coffee shops in the country while Barista Crème is present in over 30 locations. Fresh & Honest Café Limited has 3,000 coffee vending machines in 22 cities of India.
APIIC extended invitation to entrepreneurs to set up industries in SPSR Nellore district. 14 industrial plots in multi-product SEZ in Nayudupeta, 25 plots in Attivaram industrial park, 5 plots in Mambattu SEZ Phase-I and 29 plots in Mambattu SEZ Phase-II are available in the district. Plots are also available for lease.
A 60 MW coal based thermal power plant is being set up by Nekkanti Power near Kothapatnam village of Kota mandal in SPSR Nellore district. The plant is being setup at an estimated investment of Rs300 crore. 24 acres of land has already been acquired near Kothapatnam, The project is awaiting environmental clearance.
The proposed Chennai-Bangalore corridor, modelled on the Delhi-Mumbai corridor (DMIC) is in the news with neighbouring Andhra Pradesh suggesting a new route passing through their state.
Andhra Pradesh officials want the corridor to link Nellore (in the east) and Anantapur (in the west) as Nellore is already home to an integrated business city ( Sri City) with a proposed airport at Nellore and sea connectivity through Krishnapatnam.
The Chennai based A.D Jeyaveerapandia Nadar & Bros is planning to set up a unit to process onions, chillies and potatoes for export, at IFFCO SEZ in Nellore. The unit is likely to commence operations by the end of this year.
Shasun Pharmaceuticals is investing about Rs50 crore to build drug intermediates plant in Naidupeta, Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, India. These intermediates will be used as active pharmaceutical ingredients in some of its drugs derived from petroleum products. The facility is expected to start operations by January 2013 with an annual capacity of 12,000 tonne per year.
PVK Engineers is planning to setup a greenfield power equipment plant at Tada in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh. The Hyderabad-based company, which manufactures and supplies balance of plant equipment for gas, thermal and hydro electric projects and sub-assemblies, is investing Rs 90 crore in the new equipment manufacturing plant in partnership with a Chinese manufacturer.
Balaji Air Products opened its oxygen plant at 35, APIIC Industrial Park, Kakutur, Venkatachalam Mandal, Nellore. Managing Partner A.Purna Chandra Rao informed that the plant uses the latest technology, and produces highest purity oxygen for industrial and clinical use.
