A sports village is being developed at Mogallapalem village near Nellore city. The state government has allocated 150 acres of land to Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP). SAAP is proposing to setup a model sports village. The sports village is expected to host the 37th National Games in 2019. But there has been some news that Chattisgarh is going to host the 2017 edition of the games in 2019, which means Nellore may have to wait for some more time.
SAAP is confident that SAI would also establish their Regional Sports Centre at the sports village, the second one in the South after Bengaluru. SAI has such centres across the country with good infrastructure to provide training in some disciplines which are popular to a region.
A cycling track is also likely to come up here as there is no such facility in the state despite large number of medals bagged by AP. SAAP proposes to build an ultramodern large outdoor stadium and indoor stadium of international standards at the sports village. The advantage of the sports village site is that it is next to a reservoir which can be used to develop water sports, he added.
On 1st April 2017, Mr Venkaiah Naidu laid the foundation stone for the indoor stadium to be constructed at Mogallapalem, in 8 acres at a cost of Rs 150 crore.
