When it comes to revenue administration, the SPSR Nellore district is divided into 46 mandals with 968 grama panchayats, covering five revenue divisions with head quarters at Nellore, Gudur and Kavali, Naidupeta and Atmakur. There are six Municipalities namely Gudur, Kavali, Venkatagiri, Naidupeta, Sullurupeta and Atmakur and one Municipal Corporation i.e. Nellore. The population of the district was 29,66,082 of which 22.45% were urban as of 2011 census.

Nellore’s total land area is 13,076 square kilometers with an average elevation of 19 metres (62 feet). About half of the total area is cultivated and the rest is wasteland comprising of rocky land, sandy coastline or covered with scrub jungles. Pennar, Swarnamukhi and Gundlakamma are the main rivers that flow through the most of the district. Tributaries to Penna like Kandaleru and Boggeru serve the remaining area.
