Kala Bandhu Dr Tikkavarapu Subbarami Reddy, Nellore

Tikkavarapu Subbarami Reddy was born on 17th September 1943 in Nellore district. Though he wears many hats as an industrialist, politician and film producer, he is well known across India for his passion for arts especialy those related to Indian cinema.

He did his B.Com. from Nizam College, Hyderabad. He founded the Gayatri Group and has been in the field of construction business for the last 35 years apart from sugar, chemicals and now thermal power. He is also the founder of then India’s best cinema theatres (Maheswari and Parameswari), which were built in Hyderabad.

He received a Gold Medal by the then Prime Minister of India Smt. Indira Gandhi for his outstanding contribution in the construction of the then world’s biggest dam Nagarjuna Sagar Project in Andhra Pradesh in 1967. Reddy was the mud supplier for this dam.

He became the Chairman of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam Board (T.T.D.) in 2004, National Panorama Festival Committee in 1992, National Film Award Jury in 1994 and 1997, Andhra Pradesh Cultural Federation in 1994 and Member of Central Film Censor Board, 1983-85.

He produced a number of Hindi, Telugu and Tamil films of great technical and directorial excellence. He received Swarna Kamal, a national award for the best feature film and Rashtrapati Award for producing films Bhagwat Gita and Swami Vivekananda.

He as been with the Indian National Congress from the beginnning. He was elected to 11th and 12th Lok Sabha twice in 1996 and 1998 from Visakhapatnam constituency. He was elected as Rajya Sabha member in 2002 and continued in the position third term. He was member of various parliamentary committees. He was also Minister of State in the Ministry of Mines between 2006 and 2008.

He organized hundreds of music and dance concerts, participated actively in social, political, spiritual, cultural and philanthropic activities all over India, built community halls, hospitals, colleges, auditoria, etc.

  • Kala Ratna by Lt. Governor, Delhi, 1989
  • Kala Ratna by Telugu Academy, 1993
  • Doctorate by Mangalore University in recognition of social work.
  • Life Time Achievement Award in U.S.A. by American Telugu Association in 2002 for his special interest in the upliftment of socially backward and the downtrodden
