Nellore students take up massive green drive under My Tree programme

The District Water Management Agency (DWMA) and Akshada Foundation have come together for a massive afforestation programme under NREGS. 5 lakh seedlings of fruit bearing and shade providing trees are being provided to schools as well as to students. These include fruit-bearing trees such as guava, amla and drumstick, and shade trees such as Pongamia (Kanuga in Telugu).

District collector Mr B. Sridhar has launched the programme formally at the ZP High School in Amancherla village in Nellore Rural Mandal on 12th December 2011.

Akshada Foundation is involving 5,50,000 students studying in government schools from the elementary section to high school in the district. Some of these seedlings of shade trees will be planted on the premises of schools all over the district. Fruit-bearing trees will be distributed to all students for raising at their homes.

To involve the students in nurturing and protecting these plants, a My Tree history card is being given by Akshada Foundation along with each seedling to record the growth of the plant every month. Akshada Foundation Chairman Mr B Manohar Reddy said that Akshada would also monitor plant growth with help from teachers. A photograph will be taken at the time of plantation along with the student and it will be repeated once in six months to create a bond between the plant and the student. Students have to produce the history card before the teacher every month.

Project Director of DWMA, Mr Yugandhar, said that DWMA is making arrangements to transport the seedlings from the nurseries to schools and is planning to take up plantation on a single day all over the district like the pulse polio programme. It will provide funds for pitting and filling the plantation in schools.
